Arkansas National Guard scales back weather duties

LITTLE ROCK, AR (AP) - The number of Arkansas National Guard members who assisted stranded motorists and provided other aid during a massive snowstorm is being scaled back.

Officials said Thursday there are now 65 Guard members on standby for winter weather support, down from 133 on Wednesday.

The remaining troops will conduct health and wellness checks on the highways, and Guard members will continue to support ambulance service in Faulkner County through Saturday.

Officials say the National Guard logged more than 1,900 miles on frozen roadways Wednesday, helping more than 200 motorists.

The storm dumped up to two feet of snow on Clifty, Gravette and Hindsville in northwest Arkansas, and at least a half-foot fell on Little Rock Wednesday.

Travel in much of the state is hazardous because of slick roads.
