Budget Cuts Cut Security for Lt. Gov

LITTLE ROCK, Ark.  --Lieutenant Governor Winthrop Rockefeller's state police security detail has been cut from five officers to just one -- and he isn't pleased.

Still, Rockefeller spokesman Steve Brawner says the lieutenant governor did NOT want to comment on the dispute with the state police, adding it's simply a policy disagreement. State Police director Colonel Don Melton says the reduction in Rockefeller's security detail stemmed from budget cutbacks.

Melton says he shifted eight officers from protecting the governor and lieutenant governor to other duties. He says all areas of the state police budget are affected.

A legislator requested an attorney general's opinion on the legality of the cutback, but the office declined to provide one, citing possible legal action.
