Craighead County releases land for fairgrounds

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) -The possibility of the fair grounds moving to the northern part of Craighead County has moved a step further.  Thursday morning county leaders, property owners, and members of the fair board met.

"We've been studying the procedures and things and actually as long as they have everything in order, by law, according to the lawyers we have to sign it," said Craighead County Judge Ed Hill.

A site along Highway 49 near the Farville Curve has been chosen by the Craighead County Fair Association for the new location for the Northeast Arkansas District Fair Grounds.  Right now it's still in the planning stages.

Resident Peggy Laws is one of the neighbors who does not want the annexation to happen.

"Of the 37 neighbors out there 33 signed the petition objecting to having the fairgrounds by their back door," said Laws.

"We're trying as much as we can with the local folks to get their concerns addressed," said Eddie Burris, President of the Craighead County Fair Association.

Multiple residents were on hand to see this next piece of the puzzle put into place.  Many more meetings are expected before it's a done deal.

"We have another public meeting scheduled with the residents in the area for February 22nd to have some more input prior to the MAPC meeting," said Burris.

Many residents fear their voices will not be heard.

"It's kind of beside the point now.  I think the fair board and the city thinks this is a done deal," said Laws.

"Change affects everyone.  A lot of us are resistant to change.  I think it's human nature to resist change," said Burris.

The Metropolitan Area Planning Commission will meet on March 8th to discuss the proposal.  After that it will move forward to the Jonesboro City Council where they will consider annexing the property into the city.
