Arkansas hospital gives free medical checks to residents

PARAGOULD, AR (KAIT) - Medical staff at Arkansas Methodist Medical Center in Paragould are working hard to get the health of Arkansas residents on the right track. AMMC combined their efforts with First National Bank to hold a Heart Health Fair for the public in the bank's main lobby.

From 8am to 10am Thursday, people were invited to come in and get their cholesterol, glucose and blood pressure checked. Community Relations Specialist for AMMC, Monta Hedge, says "We are not only testing people for their cholesterol, glucose and blood pressure. We are giving them their results today. We also are giving out information about our Wellness Center and the Arkansas Saves Program."

This is the second annual Heart Health Fair for the hospital to hold. Monta says it's very important for people to get themselves checked regularly. "Everyone needs to know what their cholesterol is. The main thing is knowing if it's too high and if you need to be on medication. Also, we have consultants here today who will be talking to people about their results and letting them know whether or not they need to be seeking further advice from their physician."

Not everyone gets tested like they should, though. Monta says that's why AMMC medical staff decided to start holding regular free checks and inviting the public to come out. "So many people have a hard time getting to the doctor and it's so expensive to go to the doctor just to get their cholesterol and their glucose checked. And by doing this and knowing that they don't have to pay for these and if there is a problem they can seek further advice if they need to from their physician."

Residents like Carolyn Horton-Newman says Monta is absolutely right. Carolyn made a special trip to First National Bank to get herself checked and is grateful to both AMMC and First National Bank for giving people this chance. "It's giving an opportunity for residents that don't have a chance to get their screening. . .for time or money or whatever else, we can come down here and do this."
