10 Years Later: Remembering Dale Earnhardt Sr.

KANNAPOLIS, NC (WBTV) - Ten years ago, auto racing star Dale Earnhardt Sr. died from injuries suffered in a crash at the Daytona 500.  He was 49.

He died on February 18, 2001, during the final lap of the race.

Earnhardt was from Kannapolis and fans are expected to show up there on Friday to pay their respects.

Earnhardt got his start in racing at the age of 15.

In 1978, he was signed to his first Winston Cup race and quickly picked up the 'Rookie of the Year' award.

As his career flourished, he picked up the nickname "The Intimidator".  Since then, a baseball team and roller coaster at Carowinds has been named after him.
