NEWPORT, Ark. --When Lionel Bullard went to clear the brush out of an overgrown area near the home he and his wife just bought in a subdivision on Newport's east side, he got a surprise. All the weeds and brush were hiding an old cemetery.
Some of the grave markers indicate that burials date back as far as the 1850s, before Newport was even a town. Bullard discovered that the cemetery, with 40 or 50 graves, had apparently been forgotten.
There was no sign of it on county records, and it's not mentioned in genealogical sites on the Web, as one of several old graveyards that are known. Bullard said he plans to keep the cemetery trimmed, and may clean up the gravestones if he can find an expert to help him.
