Region 8 students pitch business plans

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - The 4th annual Business Expo took place on Wednesday in Rector. The event is a collaborative effort between several organizations and schools throughout Region 8.

Gifted and Talented Coordinator for Rector High School, Gail Burns, says competing in this Business Expo involves a lot of creativity and hard work. "Students create a product or service and then formed a business plan, commercial and business card to go along with their invention."

Twenty-eight teams comprised of eighty-five students from eight different schools competed in the different categories. "First of all, it's going to give them communication skills. Second of all, that very important learning about economics. And the value of having a good product, knowing what a good service is and being a good consumer. So, they are learning skills that are all about economic lessons that are so valuable for us today."

Burns says she's noticed an increase in the amount of participants. "Our school districts have increased the number of teams that come to participate and that tells us this is a fun experience as well as an educational one."

Burns says with all the many different types of projects on hand, there's no telling what students are going to learn. "They are learning about how much tax is and they are learning about the fact that they have to keep their fish under really cold water if they're going to sell fish. So, there are a lot of different economic examples and terms and life skills they're learning through this."

The Arkansas State University Economic class evaluated the projects and helped judge. For more information about Rector High School, you can log onto their website.
