BAXTER COUNTY, AR (KAIT) – The Baxter County Sheriff's Department has arrested a Norfork man for trying to extort money from a woman.

According to the Baxter County Sheriff's Department, Gerald VanLandingham was arrested and charged with terroristic threatening and criminal attempt to commit theft.

Police say VanLandingham wrote a letter saying a woman's son owed him $250,000 and demanded a payment of $100,000 in cash to be delivered to a specific location by February 24. The letter warned the victim not to contact the police or he would begin killing people if his demands weren't met.

The woman contacted police and they arrested VanLandingham at his home Wednesday night. Police say he admitted to writing the note and placing it in the victim's mailbox.

VanLandingham is in the Baxter County Detention Center on a $200,000 bond.
