Arkansas higher education director leaving

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - The Arkansas Higher Education Coordinating Board has accepted the resignation of director Jim Purcell, who is leaving to become Louisiana's higher education commissioner.

The board accepted the resignation during a special meeting on Friday. Board members also unanimously confirmed the appointment of Shane Broadway, whom Gov. Mike Beebe named as interim director on Thursday.

Broadway has served as deputy director for the Arkansas Department of Higher Education since the first of January.

The board also voted to appoint Harold Criswell as interim deputy director.

Board members will hold a special meeting April 15 to discuss the search and hiring process for a director.
