Missourians move from areas with best cropland

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. (AP) - Missourians have left counties with some of the state's best cropland over the past decade.

New population figures released by the U.S. Census Bureau show declines in about half the counties north of the Missouri River and in several southeastern Bootheel counties near the Mississippi River. Those areas of the state have some of Missouri's highest quality cropland.

By contrast, southwestern Missouri gained population.

Most of the counties that lost population since 2000 were in rural areas. Nonetheless, St. Louis County and St. Louis city accounted for more than three-quarters of the total population lost
by counties statewide.
