JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - When severe weather hits, do you know what to look for? Saturday, people met in Jonesboro for the 2011 Severe Weather Seminar. The seminar was sponsored by Craighead Country Emergency Management.

Saturday, it was all about learning what to look for when bad weather strikes, and when you need to take cover. Richard Okulski from the National Weather Service in Memphis spoke about the basics as well as the latest weather information. The goal was to equip people with the knowledge they need to protect themselves. Organizer David Moore says the seminars are important, especially for those people who live in rural communities.

"Most of the small towns that are in the county, our volunteer fire crews are our spotters during severe weather. They get out there and save their community. Not only do they get out there and fight fires, but they are watching for these storms. We're able to put this together so we can make them better prepared," says organizer David Moore.

"The biggest thing we have a challenge with is we will get people that will miss-identify a shelf cloud as a wall cloud," says Richard Okulski, with the National Weather Service.

Okulski explained the characteristics of each cloud, along with pictures. Moore says the up coming months normally have the biggest risk for severe weather. Around fifty people attended the seminar.
