6 officials who drove state cars now using own

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. (AP) - None of the six Arkansas constitutional officers who were driving themselves in state-owned vehicles last year is doing so now.

The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette reported Sunday that, of the state's seven constitutional officers, only Gov. Mike Beebe is conveyed in a state vehicle, and he doesn't drive it. The governor is driven by his State Police security detail.

Joining the attorney general, the lieutenant governor, the secretary of state, the land commissioner, the auditor and the treasurer in giving up their state vehicles - at least for the time
being, while a suit is pending in state court - is the speaker of the state House of Representatives.

The changes followed articles last year by the Democrat-Gazette on use of state-owned vehicles by top officials and other state employees.
