Grover Evans recognized at African American Cultural Center

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Jonesboro representatives met at the E. Boone Watson Center to honor Jonesboro native Grover Evans.

Evans was a former city council alderman and is known throughout the world as an award winning paralympic swimmer.

Evans says he's proud to have been a part of this community. "To be a part of this little town that was just a little over thirty something and all of a sudden booming over sixty thousand people, I'm very excited and thankful for the opportunity to be a part of it."

Evans donated a number of items from his swimming career to the African American Culture Museum inside the E. Boone Watson Center.

Jonesboro City Council member, Rennell Woods, says it means a lot of have Mr. Evans take part in the day and help draw attention to the museum that means so much to local residents. "Being able to be here and recognize one of Jonesboro's natives, Mr. Grover Evans, from the Sports Hall of Fame is a real blessing. And for him to donate some of his memorabilia to the center to bring that awareness is just a special moment in our community."

Woods says the center is particularly important to the education of our youth. "This center is very important for our youth. A lot of our youth, especially the new that come in, don't have a clue as to what has taken place in Jonesboro. Especially, in this community. This center has been a strong part of Jonesboro from the beginning of this century. It's a lot of rich history that any individual can learn and hopefully bring awareness to schools and groups about history right here in our own community."

The E. Boone Watson Community Center is located at 1005 East Logan Street. The museums hours are Monday through Friday from ten to five and Saturday and Sunday by appointment only.

For further information, you can call the center's manager Roger McKinney at 870-932-6013 or email him.
