Firefighters battle huge fire near Kennett

By Heartland News

KENNETT, MO (KFVS) - Firefighters battled a massive fire near Kennett.

According to the Kennett Fire Department, the Cotton Boll Sheltered Workshop caught fire around 11:30 Monday morning.

It's a vocational and rehabilitational training facility at 708 S. Bypass.

Crews were still on the scene at 6 p.m.

No word on a cause, but a Kennett fire captain says it started in the back of the building.  The fire is still under investigation.

Cotton Boll Sheltered Workshop manager Nancy Nichols says everyone got out of the building safely.

She says the recycling business employs 40 handicap workers.

"This was their livelihood, to work here everyday, so we will be getting them back to work as quickly as we possibly can," said Nichols.

She says the facility recycles a variety of materials and that created a problem in putting the fire out.

"Horrible, horrible," Nichols said.  "We burnt about 15 years ago, but that started in the office while we were off on Christmas holiday.  But today everyone was here, all the handicap workers.  And they got out so fast and so well.  I was just very, very fortunate that no one got hurt."

She says the group will have to find a new space to work.

"Not too fact, probably in the morning I'll be looking for office space to rent, and a place we can work out of till we can get the building redone," said Nichols.

Crews from Kennett, Caruthersville and Senath, responded to the scene of the fire.
