Insurance company wants members to get healthy

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - Members of one organization are hard at work to encourage members to get into shape. Members of Blue Cross Blue Shield met in front of the Student Union Center at Arkansas State University for a one mile walk.

Quality Program Manager for Arkansas Blue Cross Blue Shield, Ruth Ann Harp, says this program is important to her and other members. "One of the reasons we started the fitness challenge was to encourage more people to get fit and have fun while they're getting fit."

Harp says the event has grown over the years. "This is their eighth year for the fitness challenge. This year there are two hundred and seventy-six groups participated, with thirty-six in the Northeast Region. So, I'm really proud of that."

Harp says the number of people out of shape is staggering in the state of Arkansas. "Arkansas is the forty-fifth state in health rankings. You know, we'd like to move up in the rankings instead of being at the bottom."

Sixty-one percent of adult Arkansans are either overweight or obese and only seventy-nine percent eat five fruits and vegetable a day. "Only twenty-nine percent engage in some kind of physical activity. And that's kind of low, but we just wanted to see folk increasing that activity. So, that's why we do this."
