JONESBORO, Ark. (3/2/11) – Arkansas State Director of Athletics Dr. Dean Lee announced Wednesday that a deal had been reached to grant Arkansas State head men's basketball coach John Brady a three-year contract extension.
Brady is in the third year of his initial five-year contract, which will now run through the 2016 season with the extension.
"We are delighted to sign a three-year contract extension with coach Brady," said Lee. "We are pleased with the success we have achieved in his short time here at Arkansas State and with the direction the program is moving. We look forward to capitalizing on our current momentum and enjoying continued success of this basketball program under coach Brady's leadership."
The Red Wolves men's basketball program is on the heels of winning a share of the Sun Belt Conference West Division championship to earn a No. 1 seed in the upcoming Sun Belt Conference tournament.
"I appreciate Dr. Howard, Dr. Lee and the Board of Trustees for their belief and commitment to what we are trying to do with the basketball program at Arkansas State and the direction we are headed," said Brady. "We look forward to continue putting a team together that will consistently challenge for the Sun Belt title each year. Misty and I also appreciate the city of Jonesboro, Northeast Arkansas and ASU fans and supporters all over the state for making us feel not only welcomed, but a valuable part of the community and University as well. Together, we will continue to make the basketball program at ASU something everyone can feel a part of and be proud of."
Brady has posted winning records the past two seasons, including finishing the 2010-11 regular season with a 17-14 mark for his most wins during the regular season since joining the program. ASU also finished the 2010-11 slate undefeated at the Convocation Center for the first time since the 1990-91 season. The Red Wolves' 11-5 and 11-7 conference finishes the last two seasons are the best back-to-back conference records since the 1992-93 and 1993-94 seasons.
Last season, Brady led the Red Wolves to the second round of the Sun Belt Tournament and was named Coach of the Year by the Sun Belt Conference and the US Basketball Writers Association.
"John Brady is a man who possesses the highest moral and ethical character and is an outstanding basketball coach," said ASU Interim Chancellor Dr. Dan Howard. "ASU is fortunate that Coach Brady has decided to sign an extended contract and I am convinced that under his leadership the Red Wolves will compete at the highest levels both on and off the court and will represent ASU proudly."
The Sun Belt Conference Basketball Tournament is scheduled for March 5-8 in Hot Springs, Ark. The Red Wolves will play the winner of West No. 5 seed UALR and East No. 4 seed South Alabama on Sunday at 8:45 p.m. in the quarterfinals.
