MURFREESBORO, TN (BlueRaiders.com) - Two persons were being questioned and a third was being sought by Murfreesboro Police after the fatal stabbing of an MTSU Lady Raider basketball player.
Police said Tina Stewart, 21, of Memphis died as a result of multiple trauma wounds sustained in the attack. She was transported to Middle Tennessee Medical Center, but did not survive her injuries.
"She was a wonderful, vibrant young woman and a gifted athlete," MTSU President Sidney McPhee said in a press conference from the lobby of MTMC Wednesday night.
McPhee said his family hosted Stewart at his home for the past three Thanksgivings when she could not make it home for the holiday.
"This is a horrible, unspeakable tragedy," he said.
McPhee said counselors will be available to her coaches and co-players, as well as any MTSU students who need assistance in Room 329 of the KUC today or by phone at 615-898-2670.
"The team is devastated, but we'll work through this together," Athletics Director Chris Massaro said.
Police responded to Raiders Crossings Apartments at 1350 Hazelwood St. in reference to a disturbance call to 911 around 7 p.m., according to spokesman Kyle Evans.
Two people — a male and a female — were being questioned about the incident. A third individual, described as a black female, 5-feet-2 wearing blue jeans and a black top, is being sought by police.
Anyone with information about her or the incident is urged to call police at 615-893-2717 or CrimeStoppers at 615-893-7867.
