Fire in Newport kills 1; critically injures another

NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) – An early morning fire claims the life of one man, and injures another in Jackson County.

According to Newport Police Chief Michael Scudder, 59-year-old Walter Turner died at a local hospital from injuries he suffered in an early morning fire. Twenty-seven-year-old Barron Clemmons suffered burns to his face and hands, as well as smoke inhalation. Clemmons was airlifted to The Med in Memphis in critical condition.

Scudder told Region 8 News that Turner was found in the bedroom, and investigators think he had been trying to open a window to escape. Clemmons escaped from the home and was found outside when firefighters arrived.

Scudder said the fire started around 6:45 Friday morning at the Housing Authority Apartments in Newport. Investigators believe the fire started in the kitchen area from a stove being left on.

Police don't know the relationship between the 2 men.
