Accused Drug Investigator

August 27, 2003  -- posted at 8:14 a.m. CDT

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Ark.  --A former Cape Girardeau police drug investigator accused of on-the-job wrongdoing does not want his jury to be from southeast Missouri.

Paul Tipler is accused of stealing, evidence tampering, distribution of a controlled substance and forgery. He's also accused of two misdemeanor counts of patronizing prostitution.

Tipler was fired from the Cape Girardeau Police Department in December after internal and state investigations. Tipler, who is black, wants potential jurors brought in from another county with a larger black population, increasing the chances that at least a few jurors would be minorities.

He suggested choosing jurors from the St. Louis area, Boone County, Kansas City and Greene County. The judge deferred a ruling.
