Region 8 Church raises money for missionaries

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - One Region 8 church raised thousands of dollars to help spread God's message across the world.

"Our heart is missions. We have a heart to see people reach for Christ," says Bethany Strawn, Youth Director at Jonesboro First Assembly of God.

And Sunday, church members reached up in praise. This past year, the church congregation raised money for "Speed the Light". It is a program that provides the necessary tools to help missionaries on their journey. And that light was shining bright, the congregation brought in over 45-thousand dollars, the most money raised out of all 420 Assembly of God Churches in the state of Arkansas.

"This church has accomplished a great feat," says Arkansas Assemblies of God District Youth Director Dane Hall. Sunday he honored church members for their accomplishment, and presented them with an award. "It's really a big deal because this is not the biggest church within the Assembly of God churches obviously, but I believe it's not a matter of the crowd size or the money, but it's just a matter of the heart of these people," says Hall.

"We do whatever we can to raise the amount that we feel God has put on our hearts to give," says Strawn. She says the whole church played a part in donating, but the fund-raising efforts were fronted by the youth, with bake sales and whatever talents they could to raise money.

"You know teenagers a lot of times they want to buy clothes and shoes, but these students at this church wanted to reach people to Jesus. Our church family partnered with us and they made their own personal goals," says Strawn.

Goals that can help touch the world far beyond the Jonesboro City limits. "45,000 dollars! We didn't think that we could raise that. That is a wonderful feat. But it's not for our glory, it's to say God really does help us. You know, we ask Him for help and opportunities to raise this money and He always does. He's always faithful," says Strawn.

The money the churched raised has already been used to purchase a car for a missionary in Sri Lanka. Strawn says in the past five years the church has raised over 300-thousand dollars for "Speed the Light."
