Students getting prepped and pepped for testing

HARRISBURG, AR (KAIT) -A different kind of testing gets underway tomorrow in high schools all across Arkansas.  Students have been preparing for the end-of-course exams since the start of the school year.

For the second year in a row, teachers and staff members at Harrisburg High School have put their self images on the back burner to help their students.

"I think every once in a while, when we have the opportunity to be silly and to let our guard down a little bit, it really helps the students to see us in a different light," said literacy teacher Stephanie Davis.

"The teachers have worked really hard in preparing this video for us and stuff and just to show their support for us to take this test and do well on it," said student Kalei Harlson.

Monday students spent the majority of the day having fun.

"They appreciate it, they look forward to it and maybe it gives them a little bit of incentive," said teacher Ami Biggers.

"I think for us it's a chance to say you've learned the stuff, just relax," said teacher William Fortson.

Davis, who is responsible for putting on the academic pep rally, said it's important for students to take their minds off learning and be rewarded for their hard work.

"We recognize last year's high performers, proficient and advanced students," said teacher Tim Jarrett.

This is all part of motivating students to do their best.  Over the past several years teachers have really focused on raising literacy scores.

"Four years ago the scores were kind of rough but they've been on a continual increase," said Jarrett.

"As far as literacy and algebra one and geometry, we have to make annual yearly progress as far as the state is concerned," said Davis.

"We have faith in them, we know they're going to do well, we think that they are prepared," said Biggers.

Students have been getting ready for this for months and many want to do well for their teachers and for themselves.

Testing for the 11th grade literacy test starts Tuesday and goes through Wednesday.  Over the next few weeks and months, testing for Algebra I, Algebra II, Biology and Geometry will take place.
