BAXTER COUNTY, AR (KAIT) – A man who filed a false police report was arrested on felonious charges by the Baxter County Sheriff's Office.

According to police, Douglas James Jarrett, 61, of rural Mountain Home was charged with filing a false police report with law enforcement, which is a class D felony.  Jarrett was incarcerated in the Baxter County Detention Center with bond set at $10,000. He is due in Circuit Court on March 10.

Baxter County Sheriff John F. Montgomery said a civilian told a wildlife officer with the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission that a murder might have occurred in Baxter County on March 6. When the wildlife officer contacted police, an investigation began.

Investigators say they developed a suspect, and sought him out to be interviewed.  Investigators also said during questioning, Jarrett initially told them he had shot and killed another man during an altercation and indicated that he had dumped the body along a Baxter County Road.

According to the sheriff's office, Jarrett eventually admitted he had lied to the complaining party and officers the entire time.

Officers said the incident was thoroughly investigated, and all investigators are convinced that no homicide actually happened.

Six officers were involved in and spent sixty-three man hours on the investigation. Costs of the investigation exceeded $500.
