TUCSON, AZ (KOLD) - Jared Loughner will be charged in Tucson on Wednesday with the Jan. 8 murders of six people and the wounding of 13 others, including Rep. Gabrielle Giffords.
On Tuesday,exactly two months after the shootings, a federal judge ordered the release of grand jury materials to defense attorneys and is pushing for a trial that would start in September.
But Loughner's attorneys are hoping to delay the trial at least two years, saying they need more time to prepare their case.
Federal prosecutors haven't yet said whether they'll seek the death penalty, but a former federal prosecutor told KOLD News 13 that it's probably only a matter of time until they do.
"I can tell you based on my experience, I would be very surprised if the federal government did not seek the death penalty in this case," said Sean Chapman.
