Funeral director Billy Joe Emerson dies

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) – Longtime Region 8 funeral home owner Billy Joe "B.J." Emerson died Tuesday, March 8, at St. Bernards Medical Center.  He was 81.

Emerson was born in Winona, Mississippi, on November 5, 1929, to William and Ila Emerson.  Two years later his family moved to Jonesboro.

Emerson was the owner and operator of Emerson Funeral Home in Jonesboro.  His father founded the business in 1932.

In addition to operating the funeral home, Emerson was also the longtime operator of Emerson Ambulance Service, the oldest continuously-owned service in Arkansas.  Emerson attended the first Emergency Medical Technician certification classes in Arkansas.  His number was still current when he died.

Emerson served as Craighead County coroner from 1960 to 1980.  During that time he also served as the county's civil defense director.

He is survived by his wife, Betty Ann; two sons, Dr. Steve and Toby Emerson; four grandchildren and one great grandson.

Visitation will be held Wednesday, March 9, from 5pm-8pm at Emerson Funeral Home.

A memorial service will be held Thursday, March 10, at 11am in Emerson Memorial Chapel.  Burial will follow in Oaklawn Cemetery.

Honorary pallbearers include the Sisters of Holy Angels Convent, deacons of First Baptist Church and members of the NEA Funeral Directors Association.
