FORREST CITY, Ark. -- A 36-year-old Forrest City man was arraigned Thursday in the beating death of his elderly father.

District Judge Steve Routon ordered Robert Poland held without bond on a capital murder charge. No trial date was set.

Poland is accused in the apparent beating death of 82-year-old William Poland. His body was found Monday after sheriff's deputies were told he had not been seen for several days. Autopsy results have not been released.

Saint Francis County sheriff's office investigator Glenn Ramsey said at the time there were signs of forced entry at William Poland's home and several items were missing.

"The first thing that created suspicion with us is that while we were there at the scene, his son goes up the driveway, gets close enough to see our cars, and all of a sudden he makes a quick u-turn and heads back out." said Ramsey.

Ramsey said a few days before the incident happened, William Poland contacted authorities because he suspected his son was doing drugs again. On the day of the murder, Richard was arrested for a parole violation. Then, while in jail, Ramsey said his department gathered enough evidence to charge him with capital murder.
