Tax dollars for private schools

LITTLE ROCK, AR (KAIT) - A Region 8 lawmaker has proposed using Arkansas taxpayer dollars to pay for private education.

Republican Representative Jon Hubbard of Jonesboro introduced House Bill 2011 on Monday, March 7.

According to the bill, a school district would receive half the state funding for a student who is home-schooled or attends a private elementary or secondary school.  The other half of the funding would go to the student.

To be eligible, the parent of a home-schooled student would have to meet all state requirements.  The child would also be required to take a state-mandate benchmark exam and make a proficient or better score.

Democrats oppose the measure.  In an email to Region 8 News, Candace Martin with the Arkansas Democratic Party said Rep. Hubbard would put public schools "at risk by diverting state funds to private schools."

She called Hubbard's proposal a "huge disservice to the students, parents and educators."

The proposed measure has been referred to House education committee.
