Ark. officials say company didn't violate law

SEARCY, Ark. (AP) - The Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality says an extensive review has found nothing to indicate a gas services company violated any law when dangerous fumes leaked from a container last year, prompting the evacuation of about two-dozen homes in the area.

The Searcy Daily Citizen reports that the state agency hasn't fined Superior Well Services for the Nov. 11 incident near Searcy.

Searcy Emergency Management Coordinator Doug Baker says the valve on a large plastic container was broken, allowing the chemical to escape. Baker says tests showed the chemical was hydrochloric acid.

A four-foot high cloud formed but was dissipated by the wind.

ADEQ spokeswoman Cecillea Pond-Mayo said Wednesday the agency's staff is working with the company to ensure best practices for hazardous waste management are used in the future.
