Mo. groups in 4 cities campaign on smoking bans

CAPE GIRARDEAU, Mo. (AP) - Opponents to a smoking ban in Cape Girardeau have begun passing out fliers and putting up yard signs in advance of an April 5 vote on the topic.

The Cape Girardeau measure would ban smoking in all indoor workplaces, including bars, restaurants and private clubs.

Similar measures are to go before voters in O'Fallon, Webb City and Springfield on the same day.

Supporters of the bans say they will improve public health and reduce people's cancer risk.

People campaigning against the bans say they intrude on individuals' freedom to use a legal product.

More than a dozen local smoking bans have been implemented in Missouri in the past two years. A total of 18 cities have smoking bans that prohibit smoking in all bars and restaurants.
