Center hosts GED Challenge

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) - The Valley View Adult Education Center gave people in Region 8 a chance to participate in the GED challenge. It's a challenge those involved hope will spring board them off into a better future.

"Arkansas is the only state who does not charge for the GED or test preparations," said test administrator Linda Sharp.

This past weekend the Valley View Adult Education Center proposed a challenge. A challenge that allowed people in Region 8 to obtain a GED over a weekend. And with a still struggling economy, the job market can be tough.

"I've been looking for over a year, and I haven't found anything that isn't fast food," says James Johnson. He hopes getting his GED will help open doors for a better future, whether it's getting accepted into the military or job advancement. "A lot of places I've tried to work at have actually told me that I needed a high school diploma or GED to work there," said Johnson.

But for some, their reasons are a little different. Amrita Bhandari, moved to Jonesboro from India seven months ago. "When I came to the United State with my husband I didn't have any work, I didn't have any school to go study. I wasn't doing anything," said Bhandari.

When Bhandari found out the center offered GED testing for individuals that did not complete high school, she signed up. While she's already finished high school in India, the GED sparked her interest. "Those that can not complete their high school, they can come here, can join the GED. It's very interesting because it is giving the opportunity for everyone to go to the university or college. We do not have this kind of system in our country," said Bhandari.

Bhandari hopes to eventually go to college. Sharp says getting a GED is the first step.

Since the beginning of the school year, the center has helped 140 people obtain their GED, putting them on their way to record breaking numbers. The GED Challenge takes place once every semester, but the center still has normal GED testing every other week.
