ASU Women's Golf 11th after first day of John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate

STOCKBRIDGE, Ga. (3/21/11) – The Arkansas State women's golf team shot a combined 615 at Eagle's Landing Country Club on Monday, finishing the first day of competition at the John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate in 11th place among 15 teams.

The Red Wolves posted their fourth lowest score of the season with a first-round 301, leaving them in fourth place heading into the second round.  However, A-State tacked on 13 strokes to that total for the second 18 holes, dropping them seven place in the standings.

At the same time, ASU is just six strokes behind three teams tied four fourth place and nine behind third-place Michigan.  Notre Dame leads the field with a 591, while James Madison is in second with a 603.

ASU had two players finish the first two rounds among the top-25 individual leaders, including Courtney Manning and Jennifer Welch.  Manning, looking for her third straight top-25 finish, and Welch are tied for 22nd after both recorded a combined 151.

Manning carded a first-round 73, the lowest score of the day by an ASU player, before shooting a 78 for the second 18 holes.  Welch shot a first-round 76 before cutting one stroke off that total in the second round.

Anna Carling narrowly missed joining Manning and Welch in the top 25, finishing the day tied for 27th place with a 152 (75-77).  Aly Seng is tied for 68th place with a 164 (77-87) and Jennifer Loiacano tied for 73rd with a 166 (82-84).

The third and final round of the John Kirk/Panther Intercollegiate will be played tomorrow.
