Region 8 city continues economic development fund

NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) - The city of Newport is asking voters to continue paying more taxes to continue the city's economic development funding.

Monday night the city council voted to put the extension on the ballot in hopes that it will create new jobs and save many others. According to town leaders, the fund has created and saved more than 940 jobs and created dozens of new businesses and industries already.

It will be up to voters on July 12 to decide if they wish to continue the half cent sales tax through 2022.
