JONESBORO (3/23/11) – The Arkansas State baseball team scored nine unanswered runs in the fourth and fifth innings to roll to a 12-5 win over Lyon College Wednesday night at Tomlinson Stadium and Kell Field.
The win put the Red Wolves back to .500 on the season at 11-11 while Lyon took its 16th loss of the campaign moving to 12-16.
Kyle Kallsnick got Lyon on the board when he hit a solo home run to left field to take a 1-0 advantage for the Scots in the first inning.
ASU answered back in the bottom of the second when Thomas Lundborg singled-home Ryan Emery and Michael Falkner drove in Lundborg on his first of three-doubles in the contest down the left field line to give ASU its first lead of the game, 2-1.
Lyon then retook the lead, 4-2, in the top of the third inning scoring three runs.
Todd Baumgartner led off the third inning for ASU moving the Red Wolves within one run on an inside the park home run to center field.
ASU used a big fourth inning to retake the lead scoring six runs on five hits. Zack George plated Lundborg on a one-out single through the right side before Baumgartner drove in Faulkner and George on an RBI single. Emery then doubled-in two runs driving in Castaldo and Baumgartner. Emery then scored on Zach Maggio's two-out RBI single to center field. The Red Wolves ended the frame up 9-5.
ASU then scored three runs in the fifth when Faulkner hit his third double of the game to plate Lundborg. Baumgartner then sacrificed-in Faulkner and George scored when Emery reached on an error by the first baseman.
"It's good to play, obviously we have had a day of practice and getting the chance to get back on the field was important before a big weekend series," said ASU head coach Tommy Raffo. "We went into it with the intent to play as much as we could with different personnel and obviously we had a chance to do that."
Faulkner led the Red Wolves at the plate with three doubles going 3-5 from the plate. Baumgartner led ASU with four RBI while picking up two hits along with George, Emery and Maggio. ASU outhit Lyon College 12-11 while each squad picked up one error.
ASU used six pitchers in the contest with reliever John Koch picking up his second win of the season (2-0) pitching one inning with one strikeout while allowing one earned run. Brandon Farley, Cody Woodhouse, Andres Caceres and Todd Baumgartner each pitched scoreless innings for ASU in relief.
