JONESBORO, AR (KAIT) – One Region 8 library helps spring breakers pass the time with free movies.
Director of Youth Services for the Craighead County Jonesboro Public Library, Kay Taylor, says the library has become more of a community center than a house of books. "The library is not just books anymore. We have books on CD, we have DVDs you can check out, magazines you can check out. It's a fun place just to come and be. The library's kind of a community center, in a way now."
The library ended it's week of Spring Break activities with a movie showing Friday morning. "This is a wonderful opportunity for the family to come and the library has a movie license so it's another fun thing we like to offer to do sometime is show a movie. We pick one that has recently come out that the kids might want to watch. We have a big screen here, too. And it's fun to come with friends, family or whatever and see a movie at the library."
The library has had its movie license for about four years, now. Kay says they first started showing movies to give their patrons another option that would be both fun and save them some money. "One of the main reasons we started showing movies was so that maybe more people could see movies. With our movie license we can offer to show the movie for free that we already have on DVD. This was a part of our Save Money at Your Library campaign a few years ago and we've continued it. It's a nice offering, we feel like."
Of course showing a movie has also been a chance to encourage reading. In the past, Kay says they've even held a book to movie comparison discussion to see which patrons liked more. "Parents enjoy the fact that the library offers a lot of different fun activities they can come to. Things are fun, free and educational.
