ASU Students Making the Move Off-Campus

September 9, 2003 - Posted at: 6:57 p.m. CDT

JONESBORO, Ark. -- Despite having at least eight different housing options to choose from on the campus of Arkansas State University, some of the school's students are packing their bags to make it on their own off-campus.

"I have my own place, and it's personal," said one ASU sophomore. "I can shower by myself, and don't have to worry about anybody else."

Roughly 2,000 of the 10,000 students who attend the university live on campus. The average cost of a 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom Collegiate Park apartment runs $365 per month.

One student told K8 News he's finding a better deal off-campus.

"It's cheaper; a lot cheaper," said one ASU junior.

At The Links, a popular apartment complex in Jonesboro, the staff welcomes college students.

"They're ready to be on their own and just do everything right," said Manager Kathy Lowery. "They're ready to go to college, and yeah, we like them."

College students compromise half of the population at The Links, and often times Lowery says they're the group causing the least problems.

"When we go over their lease and rules and regulations they pay attention. As a matter of fact, we had to go on a call the other night, because the kids got a little loud, and they sent us an apology note the next day," said Lowery.
