AR College Enrollment Up

September 17, 2003 -- Posted at 7:54 a.m. CDT

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- The state Higher Education Department says Arkansas public colleges and universities are posting a record high enrollment this year.

The 11 public universities have 76-thousand,155 students and public two-year colleges drew 44-thousand,342 students. Together, that's a record enrollment of almost 120-thousand,500 this fall.

Department Director Linda Beene says the figures are encouraging and indicate an increasing appreciation among parents and students for a college education.

Among universities, the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences led with a 27 percent increase over last fall, followed by the University of Arkansas at Monticello with a 16 percent increase and the University of Central Arkansas with an 11-point-three percent jump.

Among colleges, Arkansas State University-Newport led with a 48-point-two percent jump, followed by Arkansas State University-Beebe with 16 percent and Pulaski Technical College with 14-point-six percent.
