ASU Tennis falls to ULM Sunday

JONESBORO (4/17/11) – The Arkansas State women's tennis team (9-6) closed out regular season play with a 4-3 loss to Sun Belt Conference rival Louisiana-Monroe Sunday afternoon at Allen Park in Jonesboro.

"I was pleased that it was a close match but of course disappointed that we couldn't pull off a win," said ASU head coach Marcia Williams.  "Hopefully, we can learn a few things from the loss that will help us at the conference tournament."

The Warhawks took the doubles point to open the day with ASU only winning in the No. 1 spot.  Freshman Emily Crowe and sophomore Ioana Teu topped ULM's Medy Blankvoort and Letha Gaigher 8-5.

The Red Wolves picked up their three points at No. 2, 3 and 5 in singles action.  Senior Jenny Herring won her final regular season match at Arkansas State, defeating Monica Winkel 6-3, 5-7, 10-5 at No. 2.  Freshman Janie Nowland downed Blankvoort at No. 3 by a score of 6-1, 2-6, 6-3, and Teu topped Vivian Polak 6-3, 3-6, 10-4 at No. 5.

The ASU squad will hit the courts again when it travels to Mobile, Ala. for the SBC Championship Thursday, April 21 through Sunday, April 24.
