Four Region 8 Troopers Honored By State Police Commission

September 17, 2003 - Posted at: 3:51 p.m. CDT

LITTLE ROCK, Ark. -- Four Arkansas State Troopers from Jonesboro and Paragould were presented Certificates of Official Commendation this morning during a regular business meeting of the Arkansas State Police Commission.  Departmental commendations are awarded by the Director of the Arkansas State Police.

In presenting the awards, Colonel Don Melton told the commissioners the commendations were the cumulative result of, "a demonstrated commitment by each of the troopers to interdepartmental cooperation and a united resolve, despite a prolonged manhunt, to apprehend a Lawrence County fugitive."

Receiving the awards were:

-Sergeant Robert Speer, 48, of Jonesboro, a 26-year veteran of the department, assigned to the agency's Highway Patrol Division, Troop C.

-Special Agent Scott Pillow, 39, of Paragould, a nine-year veteran of the department, assigned to the agency's Criminal Investigation Division, Company F.

-Corporal Wesley Smithee, 32, of Paragould, an 8-year veteran of the department, assigned to the agency's Highway Patrol Division, Troop C.

-Special Agent Brant Tosh, 29, of Jonesboro, a 6-year veteran of the department, assigned to the agency's Criminal Investigation Division, Company F.

The nominations of the four troopers stem from a chain of events beginning on September 13, 2002, specifically the execution of a search warrant at a rural Lawrence County residence where 28 grams of methamphetamine and $20,100 was seized as part of a criminal investigation.
