ASU Women 4th after first round of Sun Belt Championship

MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. (ASU) – Arkansas State shot a first-round 299 Monday on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail to finish the opening day of the Sun Belt Conference Women's Golf Championships in fourth place.

The Red Wolves' 299 matches their second lowest round this spring and fourth lowest for the entire season.  ASU trails second place North Texas and UALR by just six strokes, while Denver, ranked 44th in the nation, leads the 11-team field with a 289.

Anna Carling shot a team-best 71, her second lowest round this season, to finish the day tied for second place and only one stroke behind individual leader Malin Lundberg of UALR.

Joining Carling among the top-25 leaders for ASU were Courtney Manning and Jennifer Loiacano.  Manning shot a 75 to end the tournament's opening day tied for 17th place and Loiacano carded a 76 to finish tied for 24th.  Also competing for the Red Wolves, Jennifer Welch and Aly Seng are both tied for 31st place after recording a 77.

The three-day tournament will continue Tuesday with the second round, which is scheduled to begin at 7:30 a.m.
