FORREST CITY, AR (KAIT) – A ten-year-old Region 8 boy was recognized this week for saving his younger sister's life.

According to St. Francis County Sheriff Bobby May, Zachary Phillips used the Heimlich maneuver recently on his four-year-old sister, Presley Reeves, who was choking on a piece of candy.  Zachary learned the maneuver from his teacher, Ashley Buie.  She taught the students how to save themselves if they ever choked and how to assist others.

At Tuesday night's Quorum Court meeting, Sheriff May presented Zachary with a certificate of recognition for his heroism.  The boy also received a sheriff's badge key chain, a St. Francis County Sheriff's cap and a monetary gift from Sheriff and Mrs. May.

"I am very proud of young Zachary for his heroism," Sheriff May said.  "It is important that we recognize the heroes of our community.  He is an example for all young people of St. Francis County."

Buie also received a certificate of recognition for her outstanding leadership in the teaching profession.
