Police: Dyersburg Hostage Taker Caused His Own Death

September 19, 2003 - Posted at: 8:25 a.m. CDT

MEMPHIS, Tenn.  -- Investigators say a suicidal gunman holding a college math class hostage in Dyersburg Wednesday caused his own death.

They say 26-year-old Harold Kilpatrick fired a random pistol shot while surrounded by police.

A police SWAT team killed Kilpatrick after a nine-hour standoff at Dyersburg State Community College.

Two of Kilpatrick's hostages were shot.  One is in critical condition in a Memphis hospital and the other is listed as serious.

A ballistics test is needed to determine if they were shot by Kilpatrick or hit by police bullets.
