MUSCLE SHOALS, Ala. (4/25/11) – The Arkansas State men's golf team shot a first-round 293 Monday on the Robert Trent Jones Golf Trail, finishing the opening day of the Sun Belt Conference Championships in fourth place among 11 teams.
The Red Wolves hold a five-stroke margin over fifth-place South Alabama and trail third-place Louisiana-Monroe by just two strokes. ASU is also within six strokes of North Texas, while Denver shot a four-under par 284 to end the day atop the leaderboard.
The last time A-State, which took sixth place at last year's Sun Belt Conference Championships, finished fourth or better at its league tournament was 2000.
The Red Wolves were led by three players ending the day among the top-15 leaders, including Chris Pledger, Lloyd du Preez and Warren Hood. Hood and Pledger are both coming off top-20 finishes at the Red Wolf Intercollegiate, while du Preez is looking for his best finish since tying for sixth place at the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate played in February.
Pledger and du Preez both carded an even-par 72 to end the day tied for seventh place. Pledger's score marked the 15th time this season he has shot par or better for a round. du Preeze has now posted a round of par or better 10 times this year.
Hood isn't far behind Pledger and du Preez after posting a 73 that placed him tied for 11th. Also competing for the Red Wolves, Chance Holden shot a 76 to complete the day tied for 29th place, and Cory Williams recorded a 79 to finish 43rd.
The three-day tournament's second round will begin Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.
