Jonesboro Police Officer Facing Bribery Charges

September 22, 2003  -- Posted at 8:01 a.m. CDT

JONESBORO, Ark.  --A Jonesboro police officer accused of helping a drug dealer has been charged with taking a bribe.

Patrolman Bobby Engle was fired Friday night, minutes after he appeared before a circuit judge on the charge. An affidavit shows investigators said Engle admitted he received money in exchange for information about police drug investigations.

He turned over 120 dollars that investigators had provided an informant Wednesday to give to Engle. Officers recorded the meeting later on the parking lot of a restaurant.

The inquiry began after an informant told police the 30-year-old Engle was allegedly taking payoffs. The affidavit said Engle admitted to receiving 550 dollars from the informant. Engle is free on five-thousand dollars bond.

The felony charge is punishable by up to six years in prison and up to a ten-thousand dollar fine.
