Retired Veteran To Seek First District Congressional Seat

September 23, 2003 - Posted at: 5:07 p.m. CDT

MOUNTAIN VIEW, Ark. -- A Mountain View man says he'll try to unseat First District Congressman Marion Berry.  Vernon Humphrey, a retired Army major, says he'll seek the Republican Party's nomination to the seat in Congress representing eastern Arkansas.

Humphrey plans a formal announcement of his candidacy this evening in Paragould.  He said he got good response from an exploratory committee he set up.

Humphrey says issues in his campaign will include prescription drugs, education, and recognition of existing businesses for the role they play in the economy.

Humphrey is to make his formal announcement this evening at 6:30 at the Greene County Courthouse in Paragould.
