Businesses allowed to start cleanup in Pocahontas

POCAHONTAS, AR (KAIT) - The floodwaters have receded enough Saturday morning to allow businesses in east Pocahontas to get to their stores and start cleaning up.  That word came Saturday morning from Pocahontas Fire Chief Scott Baltz.

The Walmart Supercenter located near the Black River Bridge on U.S. 67 plans on reopening Sunday.  Chief Baltz says all food services must first contact the State Health Department before they reopen.

The river reached an all time high of 28.47 feet on Thursday.  The previous record of 27.9 feet was set in 1915.  The 2008 flood reached a height of 26.56 feet, some two feet lower than Thursday's high.

Until the area is cleaned up, anyone who does not have business in the area needs to avoid east Pocahontas.  Per the AHTD website, U.S. 67 north and south of Pocahontas remains closed Saturday morning.
