NEW YORK (KAIT) - Arkansas State history was made Saturday at the 2011 NFL Draft.
In the 7th and final round, the Houston Texans selected offensive tackle Derek Newton. Newton is the 214th overall pick.
It's the fifth straight year a Red Wolves player has been selected in the NFL Draft. Fullback Oren O'Neal started the streak in 2007 (Raiders). Tyrell Johnson was selected in 2008 (Vikings), David Johnson was drafted in 2009 (Steelers), and Alex Carrington was picked in 2010 (Bills).
ASU managed this feat for the first time in school history. Previously, Indians players were drafted by the NFL or USFL from 1974-1977 and 1983-1987.
Newton played in all 12 games in 2010, garnering 1st team All-Sun Belt honors. He played in the NFLPA Game at the Alamodome before participating in the NFL Combine.
