NEW YORK (Sun Belt) - Arkansas State offensive tackle Derek Newton was one of five Sun Belt players selected in the 2011 NFL Draft this weekend.
3rd Round - Cardinals pick Rob Housler (TE, Florida Atlantic)
Florida Atlantic tight end Rob Housler is the newest member of the Arizona Cardinals as he was selected with the fifth pick in the 2011 NFL Draft's third round.
Housler, the 69th overall pick, is the first player from the Sun Belt Conference to be taken in this year's draft. He also becomes the second player ever drafted from Florida Atlantic – joining former teammate Rusty Smith who was drafted by the Tennessee Titans in the 2010 draft.
3rd Round - Giants pick Jerrel Jernigan (WR, Troy)
The Troy Trojans will send yet another player to the NFL as wide receiver Jerrel Jernigan was selected by the New York Giants with the 83rd overall pick in the 2011 NFL Draft.
Troy has sent several noted players to the NFL including Dallas' DeMarcus Ware, New York Giants defensive lineman Osi Umenyiora, and Leodis McKelvin of Buffalo.
5th Round - Jaguars pick Rod Isaac (DB, Middle Tennessee)
Middle Tennessee Rod Issac was selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars in the 2011 NFL Draft's fifth round with the 147th overall selection.
Issac had 54 tackles, three interceptions and two forced fumbles as a senior last season, and was named to the All-Sun Belt Conference team.
7th Round - Buccaneers pick Anthony Gaitor (DB, Florida International)
With the 19th pick in the 7th round, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers slected defensive back Anthony Gaitor from FIU.
Gaitor becomes the third former FIU Panther to be drafted to the NFL following linebacker Antwan Barnes (Baltimore Ravens -- 4th round in 2007 draft) and receiver Chandler Williams (Minnesota Vikings -- 7th round in 2007 draft).
