WALNUT RIDGE, AR (AMC) - The four quarterfinal-round series in the 2011 American Midwest Conference Softball Tournament all ended with two-game sweeps in the best-of-three format.
Three of the four series came to a close on Friday, but one had to be carried over to Saturday because of darkness. That match-up produced the lone upset of the first round, where sixth-seeded William Woods University defeated No. 3 seed McKendree University, two games to none. The Owls took the first game on Friday, 6-0, before game two was suspended with the contest knotted at 6-6. William Woods' Kelsey Schulte closed out the sweep by belting a walk-off three-run homer.
The other three series went as seeded with No. 1 Williams Baptist College, second-seeded Columbia College and No. 4 seed Park University all advancing. Williams Baptist took down No. 8 Harris-Stowe State University, 10-1 and 8-2. Columbia dispatched seventh-seeded Hannibal-LaGrange University, 3-0 and 4-0, while Park defeated fifth-seeded Missouri Baptist University, 4-2 and 10-6.
The pairings for the AMC Tournament semifinal round will have Williams Baptist hosting Park, while Columbia will entertain William Woods. Both series are set to begin at 2 p.m. on Tuesday. The best-of-three finals of the 2011 AMC Softball Tournament is set for May 6-7 at the highest remaining seed.
The AMC Tournament champion will earn an automatic bid to the NAIA Softball National Championship, which will be held May 19-25 in Gulf Shores, Ala.
