NEWPORT, AR (KAIT) – An emergency evacuation in Jacksonport will remain in effect until the water goes down.
On Wednesday night the Jackson County Office of Emergency Management met with the county judge, sheriff, U.S. Corps of Engineers, Arkansas State Police and the mayors of Newport and Jacksonport. They discussed the ongoing operation and what their next course of action should be.
Sheriff David Lucas tells Region 8 News it was decided that because the Newport and Jackson County levee system is saturated and there is still "great pressure on it" from the Black River, the mandatory evacuation should not be lifted until the river drops to 32 feet at the Newport gauge.
