Bette Ellender, wife of former ASU football coach Bennie Ellender, passed away Friday

JONESBORO, Ark. (ASU) – Gladys "Bette" Howard Ellender, age 84, and wife of former ASU head football coach Bennie Ellender, passed away on Friday, May 6, 2011 surrounded by her loving family.

Ellender's funeral service is scheduled for Tuesday, May 10, 2011 at 2:00 pm at Garden of Memories Funeral Home, 4900 Airline Drive in Metairie, La. Visitation will be held from noon until service time. Interment will be in Garden of Memories Cemetery.  Condolences may be offered at www.gardenofmemoriesfuneralhome.com.

She is survived by her husband of 62 years, Bennie Ellender, and was the beloved aunt of Stephen, Warren and Stephanie and was greatly loved by many more nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.

Bennie Ellender was the head coach at ASU from 1963-70 posting a 52-20 mark over those eight seasons.  He holds the highest winning percentage of any head coach at Arkansas State at .711 and led the program to an undefeated season in 1970, going 11-0 including a trip to the Pecan Bowl for the third consecutive year.  He was named Southland Conference Coach of the Year four times following the ‘64, ‘68, ‘69 and ‘70 seasons and was inducted into the ASU Ring of Honor in 2000.
