Region 8 residents opened hearts, pocketbooks

JONESBORO, AR (KAIT)   "We're over 70 thousand dollars and this is the largest amount of money this chapter has ever raised in one single event," said Director of the Northeast Arkansas Chapter of the American Red Cross, Pam Knapp-Carver.

In the studio and on the roads, residents from Region 8 communities opened their hearts and their pocketbooks.

"We can do a whole lot with that--we sure can--I'm ecstatic," said Carver.

The money raised during Monday's Red Cross-A-Thon stays in Northeast Arkansas.  It allows the chapter here to help those in need when disaster strikes.

"We respond to the fires because a fire is no less of a disaster than the flooding.   If someone loses their home, then their home is gone," said Carver.

Right now, thousands of Region 8 residents are fighting flooding or cleaning up after the water is gone.

The Red Cross continues to respond during a time when it's needed the most.

We do it quickly and we make sure that people in Northeast Arkansas' immediate needs are met," said Carver.

That includes setting up shelters and providing assistance--offering hope and a place to go for some who may have lost everything.

"They still have a lot of work ahead of them," said Carver.

Carver says they will continue to make sure needs are met--whether it's a place to go or food to eat.  The money helps the Red Cross continue to help others.

"It's awesome.   It's going to help us tremendously," said Carver.
